Update 2 in my highly irregular update series: Older dude, 77, knocked on my window around lunch and chatted me up then invited me to sail, and I agreed, so that was getting out on this bay a bit. He's got a Pearson 30, fin keel, spade rudder, 70s or early 80s model. C, who has been MIA with classes, had in the past often commented that he hates sailing with old people, and this reminded me of that. This guy, M, has been sailing for 50 years up and here and lots of local knowledge and stories but it's mixed with casual racism. Then of course the perennial discussion of why people aren't sailing any more comes up and he sees no problem with the old white male privilege at the yacht clubs he keeps talking about maybe just maybe being related. I pointed out a few times that CSC is having no problem finding people and people are lining up to get out in sailcraft but that went between his ears, while moments later he would complain about people not listening to him... other people here, his kids, grand kids, wife, etc. Dude, if you want people to listen to you, listen to them, but I did not say that. That def re-enforces my absolutely wanting nothing to do with yacht clubs. Having nothing left but privilege and money used for no constructive purpose is pathetic. But the engineer dude who kindly hopped on with me when I was damaged and leaving a disaster a disaster at Marine Emporium was excellent company and said he had a motto of always saying yes if he possibly could. This Pearson 30 like a lot of boats of the era sails on her ear, which is to say well heeled over. Wide beam, round bottom, moderately shoal draft at 5'. Not much stability until the keel starts getting lifted up. No depth sounder. Knows the shoals from experience getting stuck on each of them. So, this was a great sail in a great boat with well meant company eager to promote sailing in the delta and a lot of history, but def reminded me of C's attitude on the matter. This guy would have gotten along great with my father tho.
