Oct. 22nd, 2022 09:55 pmLast week of classes then final. Still enjoying Doršner's text. She keeps backing me up and I'm stan'ing her in the discussions. Last week's content is on policy. U*P's global policy class was also excellent but this introduction to environmental science class is missing a big piece without that background. People do the bonus article reading and skip the text, then are all like, "the World Bank is going to fix poverty and global warming!" in the discussion and I cannot.
Got another used jib as a replacement for the used jib I blew, off of a Harbor 20, which is about a 60% jib here. The Harbor 20 is made as a day sailor and club racer by the same company, Schock. A 110% jib is way too much out here most days. If there were a third jib, it would probably be a 20% or so storm jib. Round bottomed craft require proper sail balance in heavy weather, something people with fine hulled craft apparently do not understand.
Spent today sanding, which is against the rules. And the owner (manager?) walked by. Hoping very seldom breaking rules (except for that one about bicycles) works in my favor. Old varnish may be peeling and flaking, but still, it does not simply come off. Not personally hugely concerned with appearances, but blending in requires blending in.
Got an eBay carbon monoxide detector. Apparently smokey diesel exhaust from a 70's small tractor engine has 0ppm carbon monoxide. Also apparently counterfeit carbon monoxide detectors are a whole cottage industry. I really need to not buy any digital thing ever. In my defence, all of the same fakes are on Amazon, too. Maybe I won't crowdsource safety equipment in the future.
Found out my mother wound up in the ICU, with rhinovirus of all things, and some absurdly low blood oxygen like 70%. When she got covid, she was asymptomatic (perhaps one of the times she caught it, hard to know), but here comes rhinovirus. So she's on prescribed rest now that she's home.
Work emergencies kept me from catching up on the work projects I needed to so I still need to crunch and catch up. That makes it hard to think about holidays or life.
Edit: Part of this week's material is a video on Curitiba, Brasil, a positive example of sustainability and urban renewal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRD3l3rlMpo . Anyway, they have swan boats.
Edit edit: Sent my mother R's picture of the hutch with china displayed on it. The MN side of the family coordinated shipping that to NY. One of my mother's grandmothers got it.
