Amtrak switched from the inoffensive coffee to "we proudly serve Starbucks" and it tastes like salty burnt ham. Dining car operator, which is also just one person now, microwaving meals for people, made it extremely clear she was not happy to be there and only reluctantly gave me coffee when I explained that the car attended explained that their coffee machine is broken.
The Moka Pot and beans from Ginkgo's are checked (have a theory that it's a MN thing to possessive names... Aldo's Foods, Joanne's Fabrics, etc, or maybe everywhere does that and I'm not used to talking about businesses with people so I don't notice it). I may have to start doing this differently. R sometimes talks about an electric Moka Pot. Looks like this is just a mini hot plate that's still pretty bulky but some competing brands have more svelte ones.
Buffalo NY was the first thing I saw from the train. Last call on dining car breakfast before it closes at Buffalo woke me up. Outside the window was two story piles of mostly concrete rubble in front of ruined houses, then partially ruined rail bridges to nowhere, then sprawling piles of wrecked autos, then chainlink and razor wire surrounding probably a prison, and so on and so forth.
A bunch of people on the bus were sick. A bunch of people in the station were sick. A bunch of people on the train are sick. I think I'm ready to permanently write off holiday travel. Think I managed to nip my sister's thoughtlessly shared cold after the "fighting it" stage after sneezing and running snot in to my N95 all day yesterday. I probably should have put off travel until I was well by holy hell I wanted to escape. How can family pretend they're doting on you by shoving food you don't want at you while systematically ignoring the things you do ask for? Nevermind, I know the answer. More scrap yards and wrecked bridges. A very large fenced off parking lot of cracked concrete, reclaimed by weeds. The construction and destruction look the same.
