Shared a theory with boat neighbor K who is obsessed with the birds about the number of ducklings fluctuating... I believe the two duck families are accidentally co-parenting because they lose track of quantities over a certain number. One family cannot decide if it has 7, 8, or 9 ducklings but tends towards 8. Another, seen less often, has had 4 or 5.

Fiber-fixed (hmm, bicycle fiber fix is different) exhaust where it isn't otherwise connected at all, only held in proximity by a large U bolt. The exhaust sealant I put on previously mostly crumbled and cracked. The parts being somewhat free to move relative each other didn't work well with that. Blasted the metal clean with a wire wheel first. Bless the wire wheels. Should do more layers since that wants to vibrate there, just to make it strong.

Fired up the diesel and ran it for a bit to try to set that as directed. Still going but when it first started, it predictably belched a lot of rust out.

Leaking in the exhaust connections I pulled free while working on driveshaft seals, predictably. Ordered some t-clamp style hose clamps. Installing those will mean pulling the muffler free again.

Finished transferring fuel out. If I actually got it, I only had to transfer 3 gallons. I transferred 10 in the yard, I think, filling a 5 gallon can twice. Put about 3 gallons in.

At low RPM, all power each cycle is generated in one fraction of a second so it just kicks the hull. Even with almost all power going to just kicking the hull, there's plenty of torque left over to spin the prop. There was a 1 cyl diesel used in boats for a while, the Ferryman, that people at best tolerated, complaining that it did nothing but make noise and lurch around. With the 2 cyl, I'm not crazy about how the thing basically pounds the hull with a large hammer every ignition cycle.

Cleaned the air intake manifold which was full of grime. Cleaning that up, it looks like oily rag should maybe have been inside it as a filter, and it has wire mesh for holding it, but no oil filter. Plenty of oil tho since the blowby breather connects around to there. It now has a paper filter fitted to the outside care of Sugru.

Ran new jib halyard. Plan to do main next. Main still had a radically undersized line from when I wanted to
figure out if the old line wasn't running because it was too wide. Line gets puffier with age and with trips through blocks. Reefing lines (four of those) and vang could definately stand to be replaced.

Rebedded a few more deck fittings. More to do. Deck wood coring is rotten in places which is annoying as hell. Meant to re-bed everything promptly but that didn't happen. Stitch in time. Too bad I didn't have friends with a large yard in Squim.

New shore power cord. Old one had a break in it according to the multimeter and wiggle test. Since a dock line broke and the boat was hanging in part from the power cord, it's no wonder. Don't know if that was the previous bad connection or a new additional one. Observation is in order.

Reading test materials for CA boating, I guess I need two more placards than I have to be compliant with laws.
