Jun. 14th, 2021 02:02 amLast week, hoped on K's boat, then made tentative plans to sail again. This week, BoatyBoat went out. We did short tacks in the narrow bits of the San Joaquin and then shorter tacks in the narrower Old River in to Frank's Track and sailed around in six feet of water on top of a sunken man-made island in wind gusting 30 knots. K's Cape Dory 28 is fine hulled and heavily ballasted and stands up well. BoatyBoat is more shoal draft and round bottomed and goes on her ear in that kind of wind, so we were sailing on our ear, which neither of us are really used to or comfortable with. Dinghies are neither, being mostly flat bottomed and unballasted, and wanting to sail close to flat. The Cape Dory is cutter rig but the fine hull and heavy ballast reminds me of the Nordic Folkboat. Anyway, a rousing success all around.
