May. 16th, 2023 03:01 pm30 days until U*P starts again. Registered for Web Dev I. It's proctored. This is all a cruel joke. Picked a proctored class on purpose because I figured out by accident that if I don't get a proctor assigned quickly enough, the class is automatically cancelled, without having to beg for a leave of absence. And I should have asked for two terms off. Was hoping to knock down some certifications and Coursera stuff. So not sure if I'm going to try to do this or if I'm going to try to push it back again.
Mast winch cleaned, re-greased (supposed to use light oil on the pawls but didn't, only heavy anti-corrosion grease, but this one is extremely easy to take apart and work on if this doesn't work out), and re-mounted. The wood shim under it that adapts it to the curved mast is some old dry wood. After finding it, then after noticing the crack in it, I gently tried to break it and succeeded, so yesterday was epoxying it back together and generally encasing it in epoxy. When I noticed the crack, I was feeding it tung oil to try to make it less dry. Duralac'ed the holes before and then Duralac'ed the screw thread while screwing it down, and 4200'd the wood to the mast first. Pics later. This thing is chromed bronze so would have looked like stainless (but better) when new, and now it has its own aesthetic. Lots of chromed bronze around here. Took me a while to recognize that that's what was going on with some of these fittings. Some things like stanchion bases may have been chromed bronze to start but have no chrome left. I forgot that I needed 1.5" screws in addition to the 1" I ordered but then remembered right before going in to town, so got some from the plain old Ace Hardware. They have a small selection of 316 stainless.
Edit: Major time vampire right now is fighting with cell data. Tried Verizon's in-house reseller, Visible, which promises unlimited data with the 15gb being "premium data" and data after that being "lower priority" which is a far cry from what actually happened, of being throttled to a glacial 8kbps (tried it twice on two different days). So I guess somewhere in the fineprint I didn't read, "premium data" is only available on 5G, which probably isn't out here (and 3G worked better and was faster than 4G, before they turned it off, due to fundamental laws governing noise limits of radio waves). A big part of why 5G is fast is they stole spectrum from 3G *and* 4G at the same time, and that means aggressively pushing people off of 4G, which is creating a real situation for me. PureTalk, which I had been leaning on, keeps trying to move tethering to a separate paid data allowance, breaking everything, backing off, before trying again, so really can't count on that any more. 4G being pushed in to fewer and fewer bands has carriers clamping down on 4G tethered data, but "just make it work, I'll pay you money, it's literally that or the space nazi's Starlink" doesn't seem to be an option. It's likely that towers out here haven't even been upgraded to 5G, but carrier plans designed to punish 4G don't distinguish that.
Edit Edit: If I do start this class, that confounds travel, as it's basically impossible to be in Albany while working and taking a class. I wind up zero wiggle room and not so slowly go insane. But then it gets hot enough out here that computers and access points don't work. That affects plans for hauling out. That's all another thing to figure out. I should probably hire an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker to take classes for me. Being real in response to fake stuff often seems like a moral imperative but I probably really just need to get over that. The main thing I'd learn in this class is that we've forgotten everything good and useful that we've ever known and standards, student and institution, have imploded. Beyond scheduling, I'm reluctant to take another class after the mountains of stolen, non-working code I had to grade in the last one, and stuff like that. fml. I enjoyed taking Cerro Coso classes when the instructors weren't using the class as a platform to spread right wing ideologies. Then there's feeling that I almost completely missed the era of quality education and what's left of it is quickly vanishing.
