It took me a long time to figure this out so definitely want to write it down... when I first showed up at this place, I didn't have a shore power cable. There was one, and I didn't take it with me cuz I didn't know it was mine. The owner private residence I was at emailed me and said, hey, don't you want your shore power cable?, these are expensive, ya know! I never went back and got it. I was pretty tired of going in to Discovery Bay (which shares a name with places that humans at some point found, and then some other humans found, but was man-made). So I showed up here and didn't have a shore power cable like an idiot. The maintenance guy, who was under the protection of and protecting the rogue administration that got me, offered to sell me one. I bit. It didn't work. He took and "fixed it" by removing the circuit breaker circuitry and gave it back me. It worked for a long time until enough bad enough storms with little enough slack (hard to have enough slack and have it not dragging in the water and killing swimmers) caused a break in the wires somewhere in it. Then I got another one, new, and shit's been fucked since then. The power up here goes on and off a lot, and I'm busy, so it's hard to separate effects, but power will just go out. It's probably everyone. But it may not be. So plug the multi-meter in the shore power receptical and see if it has power. If it does, let the shore power cord sit for 24 hours and clean the contacts (which corrode at an astonishing rate even though this is just a fantastically overpriced extension cord) and run off of a standard household NEMA 5-15 120v extension cord, then it might work again, or maybe it's broken now. And I should point out that in the way of systems here, I have a battery charger. No hot water heater. No bow thruster. No water maker. No refrigeration other than a 12 pack sized Peltier cooler. And the power tends to go out first thing in the morning as I'm waking up and dazed and confused and easily impressed that rural California is just having yet another outage. Since the on-board battery is fully charged at that point in the morning, the lights are off, and it's cool, I'm drawing somewhere in the neighborhood of 0 amps. Then the power goes out. It might be PG&E who spent every dime of system maintenance money on stonk buybacks or it might be the fucking shore power cable. This happened again today and it took me way too long, letting stuff in the Peltier cooler get warm, to figure out it was the fucking cable. And this is how it happens: The prongs are the cheapest mild steel. They corrode and pit like nuts and need to be dremeled every few months to make contact. This causes resistance to go high. This causes resistance to go high which causes the built-in circuit protection to not just trip but have some kind of day-or-maybe-forever long fit. This is an expensive (because I'm an idiot) Marinco shore power cable. And this happens when I'm waking up from being stole cold passed out, not when operating a power tool on that circuit. If I were astute, I would have done like the corrupt maintenance dude and lobotomitized the thing a long time ago. The McMaster plug to replace the circuit breaker from hell and that plug, and the replacement for the other end of it that won't stop pitting and corroding, cost more than the cable. Fucking doing it.
